Medalet promoting Henry Clay for president, 1840. Copper. DeWitt HC 1840-1.
OBV: Togated bust of Clay to right, I.B.C. (signature of engraver) at truncation; around, HENRY CLAY AND THE AMERICAN SYSTEM. REV: Inscription, UNITED WE STAND, enclosed by laurel wreath.
Scarce medalet for Clay as a Whig hopeful; the nomination went to William Henry Harrison. The engraver clearly had no idea what Clay actually looked like! A high grade and uncommonly well-struck specimen (reverse inscription is usually weak; "WE" is often missing).
