Parade torch, c. 1860-1880. Spherical brass oil resevoir fixed to wooden handle. Light handling wear. Size refers to overall length.
This torch is not found in Herbert Collins' monograph, Political Campaign Torches (United States National Museum Bulletin, Paper 45, 1964) however a "fireman's torch" (fig. 9) "believed to have been used in the Lincoln campaign of 1860" has a similar handle. Torches such as this were used by marching clubs in campaigns from the 1860s through the 1890s. A fine example that would accent a display of 19th century political items.
