Pinback button commemorating the Woodstock Music and Art Festival, c. 1970.

The outdoor rock music festival at Woodstock, New York in August 1969 attracted over a quarter million people. A convergence of 'sixties counterculture, it became a watershed event in Vietnam-era America. A documentary film released the following year, required viewing for anyone under 30, helped solidify Woodstock's place in history. It remains popular today for the priceless footage it contains of rock icons Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin, among others.

This pinback was issued as a promotional item for the film. The classic dove-and-guitar logo is symbolic of art in the service of social and political reform.
