Poster opposing Hubert Humphrey for president, 1968. Happening Press, San Francisco.
When President Lyndon Johnson unexpectedly withdrew from the race in March 1968, the burden of his foreign policy fell on the shoulders of his vice president and chosen successor, Hubert Humphrey. While Humphrey distanced himself from hawks, he was unable to disassociate himself from an administration that had made Vietnam the centerpiece of its foreign policy. Here Humphrey is depicted as an ass ridden by LBJ to the apocalype. Classic Cold War satire!
