Pinback button promoting George McGovern for president and Thomas Eagleton for vice president, 1972. N. G. Slater Corp., New York.
When Missouri Senator Thomas Eagleton was picked as George McGovern's running mate on the 1972 Democratic ticket, a handful of pinbacks were rushed into production--then hastily pulled from circulation when, following revelations of a history of mental illness, Eagleton was replaced by Sargent Shriver. To this day, McGovern faults the Eagleton Affair for his punishing defeat that November. McGovern-Eagleton pinbacks are prized by collectors who appreciate historical irony. This large jugate pinback bears the trademark slogan of the campaign.
