Hollywood powerbroker and Goldwater-disciple Ronald Reagan was barely a year into his first term as California governor and some were already speaking his name in connection with the White House. A formal announcement was delayed until the eve of the Republican National Convention, where it was thought Governor Reagan might emerge as a compromise candidate. When it became clear that Richard Nixon had a lock on the nomination, Reagan withdrew and endorsed his fellow Californian.
