Book, THE LIFE AND PUBLIC SERVICES OF JAMES BUCHANAN, by R.G. Horton, New York: Derby & Jackson, 1856. 8vo. Cloth. 428pp. Campaign biography. Frontise portrait from photograph by Brady.
The "Authorized" life of the urbane diplomat who capped a distinguished career with the Presidency, and who witnessed the dissolution of the Union in the final months of his single term. Dwells at length on the crisis of sectionalism, and asserts that Buchanan, the moderate, is the safest candidate. Concludes: "...we cannot but believe that an overwhelming majority, North as well as South, will insist on placing in the presidential chair, the pure patriot, and the honest man, James Buchanan."
