Mug celebrating the inauguration of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and the repeal of Prohibition, c. 1933. Stoneware.
Formed in the shape of a beer keg, with bust of Roosevelt on shield and the legend, THE NEW DEAL, front.
Roosevelt was elected on a platform that included repeal of Prohibition. Upon taking office, he signed a bill that allowed the manufacture and sale of 3.2% beer and light wines, and federal Prohibition was repealed later in 1933 with the passage of the 21st Amendment. This mug celebrates both Roosevelt's presidency, and Repeal. No doubt it was used by a jubilant New Deal Democrat for the first draft of legal beer following 13 years of national Prohibition.
A choice example, free of any defects.
