Pinback button promoting George Bush for president and Bob Dole for vice president, 1988. Bold Concepts, New York. Senator Dole ran for president in the 1988 Republican primaries. When Vice President Bush became the clear frontrunner, Dole was thought to be a top choice for the VP nomination. Dole had previously run for VP with Gerald Ford in 1976, and would head the ticket in 1996. Bush, however, chose Senator Dan Quayle, a relative unknown.
