Senator Dole ran for president in the 1988 Republican primaries. When Vice President Bush became the clear frontrunner, Dole was thought to be a top choice for the VP nomination. Dole had previously run for VP with Gerald Ford in 1976, and would head the ticket in 1996. Bush, however, chose Senator Dan Quayle, a relative unknown.
