Postal cover advocating the abolition of slavery, c. 1861. Depicts a Negro slave beneath the inscription, "The Innocent Cause of the War." Although preservation of the Union was the officially stated purpose of the war, slavery was understood to be the casus bellum, and the freedom of the slaves would ultimately provide a moral rationale. This cover reflects an abolitionist sentiment that was, in fact, rare early in the conflict.
