Throughout much of 1963, supporters of President Kennedy were gearing up for his anticipated re-election effort the following year. Arizona senator Barry Goldwater, meanwhile, was expected to be the Republican nominee. Though a Kennedy-Goldwater race never became a reality as a result of Kennedy's assassination in November, a few buttons were already in circulation, including this one.
