Photograph, a portrait of James A. Garfield, by J. F. Ryder, Cleveland, c. 1880. Imperial-size albumen print, mounted on heavy card.
Mount moderately toned, with some dampstaining in the margins.
Impressive, near life-size image of the erudite Civil War general, later congressman from Ohio, who was chosen as a compromise candidate by a deadlocked Republican nominating convention in 1880. Garfield would serve barely four months of his term before being assassinated, dying months later of his infected wound.
