In what many consider the defining moment of the Civil Rights Movement, upwards of a quarter million people marched on the nation's capital to demand an end to racial segregation and greater equality for African Americans. A century after the Emancipation Proclamation gave freedom to the slaves, the march symbolically converged on the Lincoln Memorial, where musicians performed and speakers addressed the sea of faces—as many white as black. The final speaker was the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., who delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. Photos of King at the March show him wearing a button identical to this one.
