Pinback button promoting Averell Harriman for president, 1952. Issued for the Democratic primaries.
Harriman, heir to the Union Pacific fortune, was a high-level official in every Democratic administration from Roosevelt to Carter. President Truman appointed him Commerce Secretary and, during the Korean War, National Security Advisor. In 1952, after Truman made it known he would not seek reelection, he publicly endorsed Harriman for the Democratic nomination. This did little to further Harriman's campaign, however, and he was left by the wayside in the primaries. This button features a clever play on both Truman's and Harriman's names.
