Pinback button opposing foreign alliance, industrial monopolies and imperialism, c. 1900. The Whitehead & Hoag Co., Newark, New Jersey.
At the turn of the last century, as corporations grew in size, many feared the undue influence of capital could undermine the democracy. As a corollary, the administration of William McKinley was seen as having imperial ambitions in the former Spanish colonies. This pinback would have been worn by a supporter of McKinley's Democratic rival, William Jennings Bryan.
