Ribbon promoting Abraham Lincoln for president and Andrew Johnson for vice president, 1864. Printed silk.
Center, a waving U.S. flag with Liberty Cap on pole; above, the legend, LINCOLN/ AND/ JOHNSON; below, the legend, GOD/ GRANT/ THEM VICTORY.
Light soil; minor fraying at bottom edge; 1/2-in. margin just below flag; small piece of cloth tape verso; overall displays fine or better.
A classic from Lincoln's historic reelection campaign, note the large typeface used for the word "Grant"; this is thought to be a reference to Ulysses S. Grant, whose endorsement of Lincoln's reelection gave the campaign a needed boost, and also set aside rumors that the general, fresh from battlefield victories, might have designs on the presidential chair. This ribbon would likely have been worn by Union troops under his command. We have seen only one other example on the market in recent years.
