A restriction in Alabama's state constitution prevented Gov. George Wallace from seeking a second term in 1966. The first lady of Alabama, Lurleen Wallace, therefore ran as a surrogate for her husband, whose image featured prominently in the literature produced by the campaign. Mrs. Wallace won the election, but did not finish her term, succombing to cancer while in office, in the midst of her husband's presidential campaign in 1968. She remains the only woman to govern the state, and the only female governor to die in office.
