Pinback button promoting Sam Yorty for president, 1972. Issued for the Democratic primaries.Los Angeles mayor and right-leaning Democrat Sam Yorty (known as "Saigon Sam" for his hawkish stance on Vietnam) entered the crowded field of candidates for the 1972 Democratic presidential nomination. When it became clear that McGovern was unstoppable, Yorty dropped out on the eve of the California primary, throwing his support behind Hubert Humphrey (whom he had refused to endorse in 1968, hoping that Nixon would give him a cabinet position, which he didn't). When McGovern received the nomination, Yorty left the party, and subsequently made several unsuccessful attempts for a U.S. Senate seat as a Republican.
