Pinback button promoting Estes Kefauver for president, 1952/1956.Senator Kefauver of Tennessee was the frontrunner in the Democratic primaries in 1952, but he was unacceptable to party bosses, who still controlled most state delegations. He withdrew when Stevenson emerged from the smoke-filled room, but mounted a vigorous comeback in 1956. Unable to ignore his vocal supporters, the party gave him the VP slot.
