McGovern mounted a brief campaign for the 1968 Democratic presidential nomination at the urging of supporters of Robert Kennedy, following the latter's death. It was hoped that Kennedy delegates would give McGovern their votes at the convention, but many defected to the McCarthy camp, and McGovern ended up coming in third in the balloting, with the nomination going to Hubert Humphrey.
