The acrimonious 1968 DNC, which nominated Hubert Humphrey for president, was overshadowed by riots in the streets due to the party's refusal to acknowledge the peace candidate Eugene McCarthy, or to adopt an explicit peace plank in the platform. Security was heightened, as indicated by these special magnetic passes, which utilized then-cutting-edge computer technology.
