Bentsen, the freshman senator from Texas, entered the race for the 1976 Democratic presidential nomination already having traveled to 30 states and raised over $1 million. He failed to mount an effective campaign, however, and withdrew following defeats in the early primaries. 12 years later, he would accept Mike Dukakis' offer to be his VP running mate, and later served as Treasury Secretary under Clinton.
