Pinback button promoting John Anderson for president, Patrick Lucey for vice president, and Jacob Javits for U.S. Senator, New York, 1980. N.G. Slater Corp., New York.
Javits, a liberal Republican who had held one of New York's senate seats since 1955, failed to adjust to the rightward drift of the party and lost the 1980 primary to newcomer Alfonse D'Amato. Javits decided to remain in the race, and was endorsed by the Liberal Party of New York, which also boosted Independents Anderson and Lucey.
