Levine Rotten Apple
Code  3566 Size  1.75 in. Grade  Choice/XF Price  $14.95
Pinback button satirizing the nominations of Richard Nixon and Hubert Humphrey for president by the Republican and Democratic parties, 1968. National Peace Action Coalition (NPAC). Copyright 1968 NY Review of Books.

David Levine caricature depicts Nixon and Humphrey as worms in a rotten apple.

The desire for change was strong in 1968, but this was hardly reflected in the presidential nominations of the two major parties. Ironically, both Democrats and Republicans were asked to rally behind candidates who in many ways were an endorsement of the status quo. For many voters, the choice between Nixon and Humphrey was no choice at all.

With his simple but incisive imagery, Pulitzer-Prize-winning cartoonist David Levine captured the growing malaise of the American body politic, a sense that the system was increasingly rotten to the core.

A classic Vietnam era pinback, priced well below guide (Hake MCG 2067).
