Mechanical toy, a Roosevelt Bear riding a bicycle, c. 1905. Lithographed tin; steel wire; iron.
A Roosevelt Bear wearing a suit and TR's trademark pince-nez glasses rides a bicycle across a suspended string. The perimeter of the wheels is grooved to fit over the string, while a hanging metal weight helps to keep it balanced.
Minor wear from use and some rust, but overall in excellent, working condition.
Roosevelt was the first president with a devoted following among children, thanks in large part to the wildly popular Teddy Bear, which debuted while he was in office (inspired by a famous incident in which TR refused to kill a wounded bear while on a hunting trip). Classic novelty dating to Roosevelt's presidency.
