Pinback button promoting Theodore Roosevelt for president and Robert LaFollette for governor of Wisconsin, 1904. The Whitehead & Hoag Co., Newark, New Jersey.
This scarce jugate features images of the two major leaders of the Progressive movement in the early 20th century. LaFollette resented Roosevelt's assuming the mantle of leader in 1912, and only reluctantly supported his Bull Moose candidacy. The maverick Republican would be forced to wait another 12 years before the party he founded would make him its standard-bearer. A desirable Roosevelt coattail, and early LaFollette button.
