Bumper sticker opposing Richard Nixon for president, 1972. Clergy & Laity Concerned, Blair, Nebraska.

In a speech given on Oct. 9, 1968, Nixon criticized the Johnson administration for not resolving the war in Vietnam peacefully, implying that his administration would. Having won election, Nixon scaled back U.S. ground forces, but stepped up the bombing of North Vietnam and carried the war into neighboring Cambodia and Laos. By 1972 many felt he had betrayed the public, and a group known as Clergy and Laity Concerned began issuing "Remember Oct. 9" buttons, of which we offer an example.
