Pinback button promoting Harry Truman for United States senator, Missouri, 1934.
Truman, a county judge little known outside of the Kansas City area, bested two Democratic rivals in the primary and went on to win one of Missouri's senate seats by nearly a 20% margin. According to David McCullough, during his first term in Washington, Truman was largely ignored by Franklin Roosevelt, finding it difficult even to get his calls returned by White House secretaries. In 10 years, however, he would find himself sharing Roosevelt's reelection ticket, which in turn would lead to the highest office in the land.
This scarce pinback from early in Truman's career is seldom offered.
