Electoral ticket promoting Ulysses Grant for president, Henry Wilson for vice president, and C.T. O'Ferrall for U.S. representative, Virginia, 1872. Illustrated with a patriotic woodcut of an eagle clutching Union shield. Lists electors for Virginia.
Material from Grant's reelection campaign is uncommon, presumably because a victory was all but a foregone conclusion; he faced only token opposition from a break-away faction of Republicans and a Democratic Party unable to agree on a nominee. We have handled only a few Grant-Wilson electoral tickets over the years, and had never seen this one before a bundle surfaced in a Virginia estate recently.
