Letter (ALS) of F.W. Hoffman & Sons, to a Republican Party organizer, regarding medals promoting James G. Blaine for president, 1884. Docket panel inscribed, "re getting up a medal." Datelined New York, Sept. 29, 1884.
In part:
We sent you a letter some time ago enclosing some of our Blaine Medals, but not having heard from you, we suppose you did not receive the same and therefore take the liberty of sending you several more. We think that something could be done with these Medals in the interest of the Republican Party by distributing them among voters, same as the Representatives of the Democratic Party have done, with whom we have done an extensive business with a Cleveland Medal got up exactly in the same style. The writer claims the Democrats have purchased over 70,000 medals at 6 cents each, and are selling them for 10 cents, the profit being "used for campaign purposes." Offers the Blaine medal at the same price.
Documents concerning the merchandising of campaign items are quite uncommon, this being the first such letter we have offered.
