Photograph, a group portrait of streetcar conductors on strike, unknown locality, c. 1900. Card-mounted silver print. Size refers to overall dimensions (photo is slightly smaller). Approx. 80 men, most dressed in uniform and identified as members of Division 15, American Association of Street Railway Employees, pose in the Third Street Barn (in a large city, given their number). A large banner above their head states they are on strike, ostensibly for higher wages and better working conditions. Loss at upper right corner of mount.
Important early labor content image, from the period when a strike was a radical act of defiance, and often illegal.
