Pinback button / decorative plaque, a souvenir of the Republican National Convention, Detroit, 1980. Dutchess Advertising Specialties, Poughkeepsie, New York. Converts to a wall-plaque or table display (easel folds out from back).
Features a Republican elephant riding in a classic car (a reference to the American auto industry) with 1980 plates.
Detroit had been hard-hit by the oil shock of the 1970s, and the subsequent weak economy under Carter gave Republicans an opening in 1980. The Motor City was chosen as the site of the GOP convention which nominated Ronald Reagan for president and George Bush for vice president.
