Special license plate used on vehicles in the official motor pool of Gov. George Wallace, Alabama, c. 1963. Embossed metal. The legend, GOVERNOR'S STAFF/ STAND UP FOR ALABAMA, in raised letters. General wear from use.
Despite his image as a race-baiting demagogue, Wallace was a strong social progressive, much in the mold of his hero, Huey Long. Funding for education and welfare were greatly expanded under his leadership, and he directed his staff to take a hands-on approach in tackling the struggles of average citizens, black and white alike. We don't have any hard information about this plate, but our surmise is that Wallace ordered them himself, to make his staff recognizable when traveling the backroads of Alabama to meet with constituents. A unique artifact for one of the most dynamic American politicians of the 20th century.
