Poster promoting Adlai Stevenson and opposing Dwight Eisenhower for president, 1952. National Volunteers for Stevenson, Chicago.
Adlai Stevenson had the uneviable task of convincing voters that he was better qualified to lead the country than the man who led the Allies to victory over Nazi Germany. This poster strains to make the argument that it is precisely Ike's impeccable military credentials that disqualify him for civilian office, that "a general is fit to command armies in WAR--not a nation in PEACE!" Given that several generals, beginning with Washington, have served quite capably in the office of chief executive, it is not surprising that this was not a winning argument with the electorate, and that probably explains why not many of these posters were distributed.
