Pinback button issued for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, Aug. 28, 1963.
Commemorating the 100th anniversary of Emancipation, this watershed event brought upwards of 200,000 people to the nation's capital to protest racial discrimination. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his rousing "I have a dream" speech at the conclusion of the March, on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. The coalition of sponsoring organizations issued a number of pinbacks, as did souvenir vendors. This is one that seldom appears.
Note: This pinback has an enclosed back with a gate-style clasp, which was inserted upside down during manufacture. This does not affect display, but it cannot be worn as a result (not that you were planning to!).
