B L 84
Code  14559 Size  20 x 30 mm Grade  Choice/XF Price  $125.00
Badge promoting James Blaine for president and John Logan for vice president, 1884. Gold-flashed brass shell, glass. DeWitt BH 1884-39.

Shield-shaped planchet divided into three sections: letter B against red field, upper left; letter L against white field, upper right; 84 against blue field, below. Gate clasp verso.

The unusual construction of this badge sets it apart from any other we have seen, and deserves some comment. While DeWitt describes it as enameling, this is incorrect. That process involves firing glass onto a metal surface, and here each color is a separate piece of glass, held in place by the shell enclosure. The letters and numbers are again separate peices, fitted into place. The result is an attractive badge, but it must not have been very popular, as few of them have survived.
