Billed as a "national college and high school moratorium in Commemoration of Kent State, Jackson State and Augusta [and] Demanding Total, Immediate Withdrawal from Southeast Asia," the May 5 Moratoriuam was the second of two major initiatives in the spring of 1971 spearheaded by the Student Mobilization Committee. Thousands of demonstrators, including many veterans, marched on the U.S. capital, resulting in the largest police action is U.S. history, a mass arrest of 12,000 people.
