Fob charm promoting Benjamin Harrison for president and Whitelaw Reid for vice president, 1892. Glass cube. DeWitt BH 1892-43.

Obv. Portrait of Harrison under glass. Rev. Portrait of Reid under glass. Metal band around with ring at top. When viewed from the side, slogans are visible within the cube (printed on inside of metal band). Harrison side: FREE BALLOT - HONEST DOLLAR. Reid side: PROTECT AMERICAN INDUSTRIES.

Fob charms were once an essential men's accessory, being attached to the watch chain and serving to facilitate retrieval of a pocketwatch. Because the charm was conspicuous, it was also a discrete way to express some individuality at a time when men's attire was very uniform. Political fob charms saw their heyday in the last decade of the 19th and the first decade of the 20th century. Most were very plain. This is one of the few jugate examples we have cataloged.
