Pillowcase made from two bandannas promoting Theodore Roosevelt for president, 1912. Printed cotton muslin.
Constructed of two bandannas (Collins 937) hand-stitched back-to-back to form a pillowcase. On a red field, pattern of 13 diamonds, each made up of small dotted diamond shapes, separated by array of identical diamond shapes; legend above, THE ROOSEVELT BANDANNA; below, PROGRESSIVE PARTY; enclosed by solid white line and rope border. Marked, COCHRANE MFG CO, bottom right. The same design appears front and back. One bandanna is near pristine, while the other is partially faded.
Unique period folk use of a campaign textile for domestic purposes. One could easily find a pillow to fit, or simply stuff with batting, and it would make a fine display item. Collins 937 is seen much less frequently than the well-known portrait variant, and our price is about what a single example would sell for...so you're getting two-for-one!
