When Harry Truman withdrew from the race after losing the New Hampshire primary, his next-in-line, the 74-year-old "Veep" Alben Barkley, was briefly considered as a possible replacement on the ticket. He in turn was passed over for the nomination, primarily because his age was considered a liability.
