This month we feature a selection of political exonumia. Within numismatics, exomunia broadly comprises tokens and medals, or non-monetary coinage. Political exonumia comprises tokens and medals circulated to advance a cause or candidate, and in some cases (e.g. Hard Times tokens) to undercut support for the current administration and its policies. Inaugural medals, official and otherwise, are another subset of political exonumia. Essentially any medallic object with a political aspect falls in this extensive category.
In the 21st century, we have witnessed tremendous growth in the market for 19th century political exonumia, especially high grade specimens. Since Legacy Americana began in 1999, it has spotlighted rare and historic political tokens and medals, and this month's offerings are among the best we've had the privilege to handle.
