Anderson's candidacy spearheaded a revolt by moderate and liberal Republicans opposed to the conservative drift of the party under Reagan. It also attracted support from Democrats disillusioned with Carter's moribund presidency. In a demonstration of bipartisanship, Anderson chose Patrick Lucey, ambassador to Mexico under Carter and a former Democratic governor of Wisconsin, as his running mate. The ticket polled over 6% of the popular vote in November.
