The ALP was organized by labor leaders and liberals in New York to support President Roosevelt and New Deal social programs. In the 1940s, its members split into pro- and anti-Soviet factions. In 1948, it endorsed the candidacy of FDR's wartime vice president, Henry Wallace, who also received the endorsement of the American Communist Party. The ALP remained on ballots in New York until the mid-1950s, when it was dissolved.
