Flanked by his creations, archetypal World War II GI's "Willie and Joe," the Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist appears on this scarce pinback issued for an unsuccessful run for the House in 1956. Mauldin, a self-described "Truman Democrat," found himself out of touch with the conservative voters in the largely rural 28th District of upstate New York. After his defeat, he would return to what he knew best, and won another Pulitzer in 1959.
