Lapel pin advocating liquor prohibition, c. 1900. Brass and mother-of-pearl, set with a rhinestone. Formed in the shape of a hatchet, with legend on the handle, CARRY A NATION. Slight variations.
Brandished by noted anti-saloon crusader Carrie Nation, the hatchet came to symbolize the radical Temperance movement, which condoned destruction of property in furtherance of the cause.
