Window poster promoting Charles Hughes for president, 1916. Features portrait of Hughes by Harris and Ewing "rotogravured by the Water Color Company, New York" (similar to a photogravure, a printing process that reproduces the continuous tones of a photograph). Caption reads: CHARLES E. HUGHES/ Republican Candidate for President. Minor edge tears and light damp stain in margin.
Justice Charles Evans Hughes stepped down from the Supreme Court to accept the Republican nomination for president. He was narrowly defeated by the incumbent, Woodrow Wilson. Hughes later served in the cabinet of Warren Harding, and was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court by Herbert Hoover, where he acted as a major roadblock to the New Deal initiatives of Franklin Roosevelt.
Campaign posters for Hughes are scarce. This small format was displayed in the windows of homes and businesses.
