Justice Charles Evans Hughes stepped down from the Supreme Court to accept the Republican nomination for president. He was narrowly defeated by the incumbent, Woodrow Wilson. Hughes later served in the cabinet of Warren Harding, and was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court by Herbert Hoover, where he acted as a major roadblock to the New Deal initiatives of Franklin Roosevelt.
