Bandanna promoting Grover Cleveland for president and Allen Thurman for vice president, 1888. Printed cotton muslin. Collins 614. Portraits of the candidates in small circles at the center of a red field decorated with a dotted block pattern. Border of three white stripes and cross-hatching.
The red bandanna came to symbolize Cleveland's reelection campaign after a well-publicized incident in which Thurman, while speaking at a rally, was interrupted by a sneeze, and pulled from his pocket a red handkerchief to blow his nose. Here's a near pristine example of an uncommon style.
