Clothing button celebrating the ratification of the Federal Constitution and the inauguration of President George Washington, 1789. Brass. Albert WI-1A; DeWitt GW 1789-4; Baker WI 1A. OBV: American eagle with wings displayed inverted, bearing a heart-shaped shield on breast, with olive branch in right talon and three arrows in left, surmounted by a radiated meridian sun; around, MARCH THE FOURTH 1789 MEMORABLE ERA. REV: Original loop shank.
Baker writes: "It is recorded that at sunset on the evening of March 3rd, the old Confederation was fired out by thirteen guns from the fort opposite Bowling Green (New York City); and on Wednesday, the 4th, the New Era was ushered in with the firing of eleven guns in honor of the eleven states that had adopted the Constitution."
Scarce, historic souvenir of Washington's first inauguration. A very pleasing example, sharply struck with only light surface wear, comparable to several selling for upwards of $5000 in recent auctions. Unique opportunity for the advanced collector, or anyone looking for a true mememento of our first president.
