A successful Kentucky politician who represented the state in the U.S. Senate and was twice elected governor, Chandler is best remember today for his tenure as Baseball Commissioner when the sport was integrated in the 1940s. In 1956, he was one of several candidates running in the Democratic primaries, eventually withdrawing to support Adlai Stevenson.
